danny! joins mtv's hype music roster!
"I feel like the hip-hop Keith Mansfield," quips Danny!, referring to one of the many composers during production music's golden age. Not that the world of library music is anywhere near the end of the road, mind you: today there are a handful of companies that have been operating for decades licensing their music out for film and television. But Danny, ever the music encyclopedia, is equally enthralled by the music makers behind the scenes. "I've been fascinated with these composers like Mansfield, [Alan] Hankshaw or [Steve] Gray and their contributions to production music for many years. I'm not on their level in the slightest, but I hope to be able to produce music for MTV for a very, very long time."Under the new partnership, Hype Music -- a joint venture between MTV and Sony/ATV Music Publishing's Extreme Music that operates as a music licensing firm and boutique record label -- will commission songs from Danny!'s discography for exclusive use on their various networks, as well as solicit new material from the producer/rapper. Hype Music may also reach out if any film studios have music placement needs. "Basically they'll be using songs from some of my albums, [but] if they say 'hey we need you to create some cue music for a beach scene' then I'm on call for that too. It's cool because not only do I produce but I am a vocalist as well, so they can choose between a song, an instrumental or both. It's awesome and I'm glad that MTV and I have had such a long-lasting relationship that's culminated in this arrangement."
The relationship Danny! speaks of began in 2007 when he won grand prize in the hip-hop portion of sister network mtvU's "Best Music On Campus" contest and subsequently hosted an episode of "Dean's List", a top ten video countdown program. Since then his music has been featured in such shows as "The World Of Jenks", "The Show With Vinny", and "Jersey Shore"; his song "Cafe Surreal" has also been one of the lead bumper cues since the series "AMTV" first premiered in 2009. Hype Music adheres to a strict "no-submissions" policy and hand-selected Danny!, who hopes to add to the growing library of music ready for television and film placements.
"I'm constantly creating [music], but I've done the album thing in this saturated environment to death," Danny! says. "This is the first time it feels like having an actual job, a job that I look forward to going to everyday and even working on weekends." Job well done.

In an industry where artists trade identity for dollars and mediocrity is a mainstay on Top 10 playlists, it's refreshing to see an artist stay true to his or her craft. As tempting as it is to change one's style, most musicians shirk acceptance in favor of musical integrity.
Appealing to multiple crowds without ever conforming to one, many consider South Carolina-raised (and current Atlanta resident) rapper/producer Danny! to be a breath of fresh air in a genre cluttered with uninspiring and often unintelligent music. Born to military parents in the summer of 1983, Danny! never had enough time to grow roots in any particular area. With his family criss-crossing the country, the scenery was always changing and so were Danny!'s friends; the only long-term relationship he was able to maintain was the one he had with music. His mother supported her son's interests, buying him music equipment every Christmas. By age 16 he was a serious beatmaker and writing rhymes became his next conquest.
His breakthrough album "Charm" earned him a nod from the Recording Academy in late 2006, and his full-length follow-up, "And I Love H.E.R.: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack", was praised by Pitchfork, AllMusic, and was named by ABC News as one of the 50 best albums of 2008. "Where Is Danny?" was leaked onto the web in late 2009 and received rave reviews for its brash, in-your-face content and loopy production unseen in hip-hop for quite some time. Its proper release on Interscope Records later in 2011 would yield a single, the title track "Where Is Danny?", that was later handpicked by Questlove himself to feature in a commercial for SONOS starring The Roots drummer.
Questlove also signed Danny! to his record company Okayplayer Records in late 2012 after being tipped off by Jay-Z himself, dubbing the young artist "Hov's Fav Cat". After a high-energy performance on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" Danny! released the "Payback" on the Okayplayer label with musical production touted as a tribute to the Timbaland and Missy Elliott "sound" from the 1990s. The album also featured appearances from Lil B, actress Amber Tamblyn and even Questlove.
Now working full-time as a music composer/recording artist for Hype Music, a joint venture between MTV and Sony/ATV Music Publishing's Extreme Music, Danny! is an on-demand talent for the upstart production music library's television and film placement needs. Predicted by EBONY Magazine to have a "breakout year" in 2013, who knows what else is in store for Danny!? -
